Step inside the development process of the games in the It is as if you were… series by Pippin Barr. The exhibition pulls together prototypes, sketches, design journals, and more to reveal the in-between moments of game design.

Find out why Pippin switched to a Windows 95 look and feel for It is as if you were doing work or how he decided to cut zen gongs from It is if you were on your phone. Draw your own conclusions and even branch off and think up your own versions of the games.

The exhibition is part of AMAZE. / Berlin 2025 (May 14 – 17 2025).

Method for Design Materialization

The exhibition is the result of a collaboration with Pippin Barr and applies the same MDM (Method for Design Materialization) approach he uses for his own games and have co-developed. Check out the repository for more details and insights into the development process of the exhibition.

Who is this Pippin Barr guy?

Pippin Barr is an experimental game designer and Associate Professor of Computation Arts at Concordia University. His work addresses everything from contemporary art to the nature of video games and video game technologies. Pippin cohosts the podcast GAMETHING and his latest book on game design The Stuff Games are Made Of.

And what is Devolution?

Looking at games and game development from the perspective of Devolution lets the visitors discover new and inspiring aspects of how games are growing into shape and what this means for game design and development and digital media in general. In contrast to the usual reception of the finished end result, Devolution lets you travel the whole long road of design and development, providing valuable insights to the visitors.
